Navi Pillay was in Nuremberg, Germany, at a conference of human rights lawyers and judges when she learned she had won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Video of the moment shows her addressing the room with a line aimed squarely at Washington.

"If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump."

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award in Oslo on the morning of October 9. Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes said the prize recognized someone who "with exceptional courage and integrity, has led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order," citing her role in ensuring that "war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted."

Pillay, 85, built that record over six decades. Born into an Indian Tamil family in apartheid South Africa, she became the first woman to open a law practice in Natal in 1967 and went on to defend anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela, while exposing torture and winning rights protections for prisoners on Robben Island. She later served as president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, a judge at the International Criminal Court, and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

The Gaza Finding

Her most recent post was chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, which concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. Speaking to the news organization, Pillay described the inquiry's final act in office: "The last thing I did is the delivery of the report on Gaza naming what's happening there as genocide."

The commission's conclusions went further than the finding itself. In remarks to Reuters last year, Pillay said the panel named three individuals it held responsible: Israel's prime minister, its president, and its former defense minister. "We said that since they acted as agents of the state, then the state of Israel is responsible," she said, calling the ongoing situation in Gaza "a moral outrage and a legal emergency."

Israel's Foreign Ministry responded on X, calling the Nobel award a "grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice."

War crimes prosecutor Reed Brody, who appeared alongside the footage of the announcement, called the prize "a stinging rebuke to Donald Trump" and said reverence for Pillay runs throughout the human rights movement. Brody, a member of the UN Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua, separately raised the Trump administration's deportation of Nicaraguan opposition activist Jeffrey Jarquín, who was seeking asylum in the United States and was imprisoned upon return to Nicaragua at a facility where he had previously been tortured, according to Brody's account.

The Nobel Committee's selection places the UN's genocide finding at the center of this year's prize, a determination the Israeli government continues to reject outright.
